Writer/Director: UNIVERS'L (Feature), urban drama set at a multi-ethic
mini-mall in South Central LA the day the '92 riots started. Stars Tony
Todd. UNIVERS'L has been included in the Official Selections at
Mannheim-Heidelberg, where it was runner-up for the Fassbinder prize;
Bergamo, Italy and Detroit Int'l Film Festivals as well as being included
at Mill Valley, Chicago Int'l, Goteborg and the 50th Anniversary of the
Film Festival of Human Rights in Brussels, Belgium. UNIVERS'L aired on
PBS Station KCET in 2002 and is currently being shown at USC as part of
the film and ethnic studies departments, and will be distributed by LEO
Anna Nicholas is the author of THE BIG BOWLING BALL, a short starring
Remar and directed by MJ McDonnell, considered for an Academy Award, and
RIDER, directed by Jim Weiner. She was awarded a Tano Media Fellowship
(Sept 2002), has won the Oregon Screenwriting Competition and Walden
Fellowship, and has twice been a finalist for the Chesterfield
Fellowship, Sundance Filmmakers Lab and Scriptapalooza TV Writing
As a screenwriter her film scripts have been optioned
numerous times and she is active as a script doctor for Fox Searchlight,
Wes Craven, Working Title Films and Sony Pictures.
Member of the Padua Hills Playwrights in Los Angeles under
Murray Mednick and David Henry Hwang, and was an original member of John
Steppling's Heliogabalus Theatre Company as well as a founding member
LA Theatreworks' Writers' Dialogue, conducted by Doris Baizley. Her
produced plays include LU/LOU, produced and directed by Dorothy Lyman
the LEX Theatre in Hollywood; INCUNABLULA, produced as a radio play for
"The Play's the Thing" on National Public Radio station KCRW,
BEAVER SUITE, a trio of one-acts, which she directed and which were
produced by Friends and Artists Theatre Ensemble as part of the Alliance
of Los Angeles Playwrights' Womens One-Act Play Festival. THE BEAVER
SUITE, was also produced in New York on Theatre Row by The Love Creek
Theatre Company and by Metropolitan Stage.
Starred in original one-woman show I LOVE PARIS directed by Ron
Orbach, created the - Lead - role in SWING LOW at the Samuel Beckett
Theatre, New York. She also appeared in the long running comedy ABSURD
PERSON SINGULAR at the Odyssey Theatre in LA, directed by Ron Sossi.
Other LA stage credits include Snoo Wilson's MORE LIGHT, NO PLACE TO BE
SOMEBODY, and MEAT DREAMS. She has several film and TV credits including:
FINAL ANALYSIS, COTTON CLUB, BLOODSTONE, FUNNY ABOUT LOVE; PERFECT
STRANGERS, REMINGTON STEELE, THE WILL DURST SHOW and TOTAL REALITY. She
attended Mills College and SUNY/Purchase, and holds a JD from The
Benjamin Cardozo School of Law in New York.
