Carol Gehring
DIRECTOR/WRITER/CINEMATOGRAPHER/EDITOR/
PRODUCER/PHOTOGRAPHER
Visual artist and Director Carol Gehring earned her BFA in Photography/Film/Video,
2000, and her MFA in Film/Video, 2003, at the California Institute of
the Arts. Before Gehring’s return to school, she had a successful
career in the publishing industry with VOGUE magazine, and as a fashion
photographer. In 2002, she was invited to the Art Akademie, Munich, Germany
as a Visiting Artist, as well as Scripps College, 2001, Claremont, CA
for her experimental work in New Media.
Gehring was board President of Trip Dance Theatre from 1997-2003, and
now acting board member, and visual artist for the company. Trip’s
2004 Horton award Nomination for Breath & Bone featured her work.
Gehring continues to work in collaboration with artists in performance,
music, theater, and dance.
Currently, several art reps and architectural design firms have commissioned
her fine art photographic work for commercial and private collections.
On the film side, Gehring was Artistic Director, Cinematographer, and
Editor for the upcoming comedy pilot, Total Ridiculous Live, in collaboration
with performance actor and comedy writer Michael Bommarito, and the TRL
team.
When sampling music of other artists, or working in collaboration with
other composers, Gehring’s sound design is an integral part of a
rhythmical dynamic in her work, fusing visual content with lyrical harmony.
Whether exploring comedy, experimental narrative or documentary subjects
Gehring’s work reflects elements of culture like an investigative
reporter, overturning assumptions, while re-directing links to memory,
and the unconscious.
Gehring’s work investigates space, set in familiar landscapes, but
slightly left of center. She continually erases boundaries, whether they
are psychological, geographical, architectural, or waxing poetic, bringing
elements of surprise, horror, beauty, or just plain laughingly hysterical
comic relief. Gehring is open to experimenting in all genres of film/video,
and not tied down to a specific category. Working outside the box is her
precept and her friend.
